The best way I have found it to look up the part number for your particular year and the look up years that are close to your to see if the part number is the same. www.cmsnl.com/yamaha_model8287/
There is a program that you can buy that will do it too. Can't think of it right now.

Go Into the Vault under "Manual -- Parts List" and go to the second link down at Biker.net. Click on your Year of bike and go into the colum on the left and choose the area, eg; engine, electrical. This is the easiest way to cross reference as the PDF file come up in different pages

excellant thanks very much....
also...what rpm should my 650 sit at when just idling? I was told 1200 but was told by another source 1000rpm...
its sort of backfiring at both rpm until the engine wrms up so I am curious!
cheers
Ian

I can only go by my Clymer manual . Other folks might have different info. In the tune up specs quick reference data bottom of the page it says :
Idle speed
1970-1978(early) 1,100-1,200 rpms
1978(late) and later 1,200 rpms"
Online manual
www.knucklebusterinc.c.../XS650.pdf has some stuff.

The manuals say 1200 RPM for idle. In real life you can idle your bike at any speed you wish (as long as your electrical system is healthy). I run my idle at 1100 RPM.
There is one reason that 1200 RPM is recommended. Once you drop below 1200 RPM, the alternator output voltage decreases. Combine that with old electrical components and corroded electrical connections, and you end up with low voltage. Your TCI (ignition) may not like this low voltage and the stock turn signal flashers don't flash with this low voltage.
The overall ability of your bike to run smoothly is determined by a healthy battery/charging system. What is your battery voltage at 1200 and 3000 RPM?
What is the condition of your carbs? Are you confident they are clean?

clean carbs!! AHA! there is a story...I broke down and the thing just wouldnt start. I believe you gave me some good ideas initially, well...it ended up in a local mechanics shop and he pulled the carbs and pointed out gunk in them. The last carb clean someone had done, they put grease along the top of the carbs and then re-attached them. I am thinking for a better vacuum seal. Some of it ended up inside and there was also a rust colour in there. The mechanic cleaned the carbs and called me back a few hours later (i live 3 minutes walk from teh place) and he showed me the fuel filter. It was about 80% clogged with rust and then he showed me the gas he got from my tank...it was just the rustiest piece of fuel i have ever seen, he let it settle over night and I looked again. It was mad!
Anyway, carbs are clean again and the inner tank rust problem seems to be gone for now. I full expect this to be recurring but know more now of that to look for and can deal with it better.
thanks again for all ideas and help. This forum is great!
