I just got an 83 Heritage Special and was planning a few mods. I'm very new to this so please bare with me.
What tanks are you guys all using and what fabrication (if any) is required to make them fit?
thanks in advance.

I understand that other years will bolt on but I've seen some aftermarket tanks on bikes in the gallery here that have the little tab for bolting it to the backbone. Is that a custom fab job? Also seen some in catalogs that look like they would just bolt right up?
Just curious.
Thanks.

Only tanks that r bolt on are xs, tx, xs1, etc. If it don't belong to your bike chances r u will have to mod it.

The xs 650 has a U-shaped cup on each side of the backbone. there is a peg on each side of the tank tunnel that slides into these cups. then the back of the tank just bolts down. to fit an aftermarket or custom tank, you may need to remove these cups and or drill some holes, weld on some threaded bosses, or etc. (any combination of the above)
ost Tanks have ears at each end (sportster style) So it could just be as easy as drilling a few holes. Hope this helps!

I mounted a sportster peanut tank on my 77.Like mentioned,I removed those front cups with a chisel and hammer and ground down the spot welds.I then placed the tank where I wanted.I have a center punch that fit through the mounting holes and drilled two holes in the back bone. The front fit snug. The rear, was a little sloppy,so I shimmed it out with a couuple washers on either side.I used all thread and chrome acorn nuts to mount.
