I have what looks like an oil seepage on the top of my engine, sort of centered around the neutral switch connector. It is screwed in tight. Is there something in the connector that could pass oil, like maybe an insulating inset that's loose?

Wipe you finger under the large acorn nut that covers the cam chain adjuster....the o-ring in that acorn nut squashes out and can leak........for mine I faced off the surface the o-ring fits in so it protrudes a bit more..........doesn't leak anymore.....not sure that's it but........??

xjwmx,

Right. It is the insulating insert that is leaking.

Remove the neutral switch, put it in a vise and stake the top in 6 places using a chisel and hammer. Just a gentle tap, please...

If you have trouble unscrewing the wire connector because it wants to rotate, cut the wire and crimp on matching bullet connectors when you reinstall it.

Very good. But seeing as I don't have a bench vice or a chisel it will probably just seep for awhile. Very good to know what the problem is though.

ine doesn't have a screw-on connection anywhere that I can see though. The connection is something like a spade lug with a cover on it that clips on.

I've got one that has a spring loaded sleeve that you depress and the end of the bare wire goes into (74TX650)

Ihave the same problem but; mine has a crack in it.
I tried epoxy and Pamco Petes repair it made an improvement but I would like to replace it.
I could not find a replacement on Mikes site.
Does anyone know where to get one?

TIA
Rick

It finally got so bad that I had to do something. Instead of staking it I crimped it slightly at the 6 points using a mini-vice grip. We'll see how it goes. I think the idea is to seat the plastic inside with pressure to make a better seal. I think my connector might be like Jayel's. It is a spring loaded washer though rather than a sleeve.

It's likely you'll find one in good shape if you start snooping around used engines. If you take one from a good used engine, be sure to plug the hole somehow, keep the critters out.

The customer's cost for a new switch from a dealer is about $8. (SKU: 3G1-82540-00-00 for an '81 Special)

But the fix is simple and appears to work. It's not leaking at all now. It had gotten so bad that oil was pooling up in the corners on the top of the crankcase and running down onto my exhaust Smile
