Is it possible/advisable to use a later model front master cylinder on an early model xs?

I'm needing a replacement for my '72 and wondered if I can use something like a '76,77,78-? or if those are not compatible?

is there a difference in the dual disc master and the single?

thanks.

I'm using a Mikes Part #08-0265 16mm bore master cylinder on my '73 and it works great. It would also allow you to put dual discs on the front if you wanted to. It cost only $9.00 more than a rebuild kit for the original m/c (if you can find one) and I put more trust in it. Brakes are no fun if they don't work when you need them.

I think any m/c that has the right size piston, 16 mm will work. From any brand of bike. I have one from an 82 Seca on my 75.
The older style two piston caliper, when used as a dual disc set up needed a 22 0r 27 mm bore m/c to push enough fluid to work both calipers. I have a dual disc setup using the later style one piston calipers.
The 16 mm m/c works great with two single piston calipers.
