I'm 'restoring' my '72 ....and considering going with the '71 color (candy gold/butterscotch and whit) rather than the red/white of the '72s.

what affect do you think the color change would have on the bike's resale value (all things equal). the original paint was gone, literally, when I got the bike so saving it wasn't an option....

Well, I would think that having fresh paint would enhance it's value as long as you don't paint it some garish color that only you and your dog like.

Using a factory scheme is the way to go.

To get maximum appeal, I'd stick with what is appropriate to the year of your bike. Anything else is just another paint job, which may add some value to the bike, but not the same as what is appropriate to the year. I think you would see a difference reflected in the price.

What is funny is that I've seen '71's painted like the '72, but not the other way around. Seems most don't care for the "candy orange" (which is really yellow and not orange).

This is just my opinion.

It's your bike and a paint job is easily corrected by the next caretaker. However, if you are truly restoring the bike then the original paint scheme is a necessity.

reminds me of the stories I've heard about folks cutting the crossbar out of the rear window on the earliest vw's to make them look like 'this years model' !!!

I also considered the european color scheme of black/orange with the yellow pinstripe....

but who knows....

I was mostly curious about what any of it would do to the value.

I'd wager it won't be worth as much as if it had the 'correct' paint.

some of the original paint jobs are cool and I wouldn't mess with them if they were in decent shape but some of the solid blacks or reds who cares? and mine was originally the luverly 1974 sh1t (cinnamon) brown that had already been painted black so I didn't feel to bad picking a different color than stock, also the difference between a daily rider and a concours restoration might influence your choice of paint

jayel:
I only ribbed you because I used to have a 77 chevy pickup about the same color as your bike. Everybody told me to paint it so I did, the same color yellow again. With white trim it looked sharp.

They just gave up on me then.

Restoration to me means as stock as possible. To the right buyer that will get the best price; of course you have to find that buyer.
Rejuvenating an old bike into a nice rider is another direction. As the owner of a red xs2, I would go for the gold, it is such a distinctive colour and looks so 'right'. It may appeal to more buyers.

I have never seen one in the orange and black in person, but if I had the budget its the one... and technically correct as well. The stripes are different on all the combinations as well.

JeffM:
I agree, that color on the XS2 is a knock out. If they had offered that paint scheme here in the states there is no doubt in my mind that they would have sold many more XS2's than they did.

The original paint on my '82 SJ was so blah ("New Yamaha Black") that, in spite of the fact the tank had no dings and only surface scratches, I replaced the ho-hum black fenders with chrome ones from an '81, the black headlight ditto, and had the tank and side covers painted a deep metallic blue with a wide gold stripe down the center of the tank. Looks great!

If somebody buys it and wants it "stock," I'll hand him the box of old, scratched and dented fenders and headlight shell from my attic, shoot the tank with a rattle-can of black, and hand it over.

Had a retired Yamaha dealer from Queensland Australia over the other day and he told me an interesting fact.

Here in Australia Yamaha imported their bikes separate, state to state. Meaning it was not Yamaha Australia, but Yamaha Queensland or Yamaha Victoria.
Queensland imported only red tanks on their 76B models.

Original is best but as long as its not an outragious color & as long as you put the proper decals on it the drop wont be that bad. I would do whatever appeals to you unless youre buuilding it to sell. This Id think would apply more to standards then to specials

650skull, wouldn't a 76 be a "C" model? Love that paint scheme anyway.

I guess this begs the question, would the orange/black combo actually make it more desirable? I know I'd rather have that combo....

and does anyone know about the orange candy vs. reg orange?
