i have a custom 2-in-1 and right now it's goes back to the hub, btw i have a 4" stretch, and i want a deeper sound. if i shorten it will it sound deeper?
or will the tone get higher? loud is not an issue, i love'm loud, just want a lower tone, thanks

the tone of your pipes will depend on what kind of muffler you have on, a unbaffled xs will sound like a briggs&stratton no matter the lenght of the pipe
just go to youtube and type in xs650 exhaust and you can find vids of different exhaust systems to listen to

The sweetest exhaust tone I've ever heard from a 2 to 1 on an XS would be a Yoshimura, real low deep sounding exhaust pulse. Check E bay and look for one with baffle core diameter of 1 3/4 inches,anything larger on the baffle and you might have to reduce the exit outlet to build some back pressure.
