The xs is a simple bike to work on in my opinion,If you follow directions well it should be no problem as long as your not a yuppy with tools. You'll need a valve spring compressor tool, and metric wrenches and sockets, maybe a cam chain tool , but I always slip the bearings off without breaking the chain.Just get a haynes manual or whatever manual you can find and ask questions here if you need to,everyone is great at getting back to you rather quickly. You'll get more satisfaction out of your ride if you work on it yourself, for what your gonna pay a mechanic you could probably buy another xs. Most important thing I think is the cam position(TDC) when installing it.Just do it

I rebuilt mine and went first over. shopped ebay, found a set of NOS first over pistons for $25 each, rings from Mike's, local machine shop bored to match the pistons. $35 per hole.
ike's 750 kit seems to be a good price. His regular kits are an ok price too.
If you can read and understand what the books say, then you can do the job. Just don't get in too big a hurry. Tearing them back down because you skipped a step or two sucks the big one.
Reading the assembly proceduers others have used on here will help alot, and don't be afraid of asking questions.
Even if you have to back up a step or two, doing your own will be a great learning experence. Most shops charge $75 -150 an hour, won't take long to run up a very large bill.

how about tearing through the bottom end? tough stuff or no? and short of looking into my manual [which i can't do as i'm a thousand miles from home] i think i'm leaking oil into the points on the right side of the engine... anyone have a clue about that? there's definitely oil in there [and not just a small amount] when i removed the cover last...

Killer, you got a printer? Download & print out the knucklebusters manual. That's not too big,and you can just use the page's you need. Cam seal's & "o" ring under that cover, along with a gasket. Not real hard to do. Mike's has the part's,& usually three day's shipping. At least to me in Ct. And if your going to tear into it all the way, you do need a good manual. Not saying the one I mentioned isn't, just a book, to me, is easier to use. If your's is 1000 mile's away & your tearing into that machine, I'd get another. $20- why not. Confused

I wouldn't tear into the bottom end unless the crank doesn't measure up to specs or there is transmission trouble. Your manual will explain how to do this, and what the specs are. As far as leaks go gordo pointed you in the right direction.
