I just picked up a 650 with the mufflers cut off. A guy at the local dealer said that you don't need to rejet, just some carb adjustment. Bike seems to run fine after warming up, but getting there is a while. Also, flames occasionally shoot out of the right side only. Any comments and direction are welcome.

They need some back pressure to run right. If you run without mufflers you will meet new friends.

The guy at the local dealer should pull his head out. Any major change from the stock system, both intake and exhaust, is gonna reguire tuning, rejetting is part of the tuning. The open pipes will flow more air. More air needs more gas or it will be to lean, overheating and engine damage will result.

xsleo is spot on, it's not backpressure but tuning that is the key, it's true that backpressure makes it easier to fine tune a bike but does so at the sacrifice of a little performance (the xs is not a fast bike so no biggie in my eyes if you want it quiet). Here is my bike with open pipes.... two years, 4000mi and plugs look great Wink www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoxwaVAn7qw

Check out the fuel section on here and the carb guide at the Garage. This will help you make the engine run right. It may take a lot of reading and tinkering, but you will be pleased with haveing a good runner and not worry about burning up you engine.
