replacing speedo & removed the small black strip with two wires attached that goes into back of speedo. Does it matter which way round it goes back & what does it do???

That just maybe, I say maybe, a sensor of the turn signal cancelling unit.
See what happens.

that is the reed switch for the turnsignal canceller, it measures distance travelled and send s a signal to the canceller unit its self, yes it has polarity in that it measures the speedos turning forward motion
