I have run all over to no avail, and finally settled on these. I'm wondering if one on each side of my tank in front of each petcock will be strong enough to collect metallic contaminants before they reach my siphons. Or can I use two on each side?

After reading more about the neo type, I was worried about damage to my Pamco since they can damage credit cards, computers, watches, etc.

Thoughts?

I have seen small magnets at Lowe's . In the hardware isle.
Putting magnets in side the tank should work.
Some fuel filters they sell for cars have a magnet built into them to help catch any rust from getting paast the filter. The ones I have seen come apart to clean or replace the element. They are much to large for our bikes.

Heres where to get them in many sizes.

Not IN the tank... but under it. Correct, nudude? Do they HAVE to be the Neo/rare earth type? Radio Shack has the little tiny ones, but can I use more than one per side and is there any danger of damaging my Pamco?

TeeCat,

You won't damage the PAMCO, but if these are really, really powerful magnets, then you might want to check the timing before and after installation.

I thought that putting them in the tank would be the way to go. You can just attach a wire loop to them so you can snag the wire and remove them. They would be far more effective in the tank and this gives you a way to clean off the accumulated iron particles.

The ones I have at the moment are the ones at the URL in my first post. I feel they might be strong enough.

Good idea on the wire. What's the best way to attach a wire loop to a magnet? Can they be drilled? And what about the "free" end of the wire? Can one secure that somewhere without disrupting the cap closure/seal?

Another magnet?

That's what I was contemplating, yama... maybe a magnet on each end of a substantially thick wire... the uppermost magnet fixed to the tank's ridge. I'd have one such assembly on each side... one for each petcock.

Or... one wire that traverses the hump with a mag on each end.

Well, you cannot drill a magnet or do anything to it, like hammering etc., it will weaken the magnet.

Do these magnets have any sort of shape to them? If so, you could just wrap a wire around them. If you loop the wire, then you could reach into the tank and snag it with something.

They're discs. Maye I could wrap the wire around each magnet in such a way that the magnet can't escape, or get some other ones with holes or some irregular shape.

TC and Pete:
I'm not sure that I would put them inside the tank, simply place them on the bottom as close to the petcock as you can, either on the flat just ahead of it or in the tunnel along side of it. The reason for the rare earth type is the strength of them. If you use a standard craft magnet, like used to hang "refrigerator art" it will most likely fall off at some point and will not attract the metallic particals from as far away inside the tank. The whole idea is to attrack that debris from as far away as possible before it has a chance to get to the petcock. This works especially well if you have to open the reserve once and awhile.

Here is the link for them again, the turn around on orders from this place is great, like a week or better (in the states) and you never know, you might find some other very interesting toys on the site as well.

www.easybuiltmodels.co...tm#magnets

Scroll down to the bottom and note that they offer one with a hole in it.
Don't underestimate these magnets just because they are small, they are extremely powerful.

Pete:
aybe something for you to consider in your ignition designs or other related electrical applications.

Jeff

I use rare earth magnets to clamp the tops of guitars there very strong you can get them at stewmac.com.there also used to charge guitar pickups, they have a hole in the middle so you could tie something to them but let me warn you I dont think you want to put rare earth magnets in your tank you'll never get them out. I have had these magnets fly across the workbench and smash into each other. If you just rubbed them up and down the tank(with a rag between the magnet and tank you could drag all the metal down to the petcock hole then remove the petcock and put the magnet back on,which would suck everything out.

Okay... maybe I should just go with the rare earth ones... I just didn't want to have to order them... I have this "Me want it now!" thing going on. Razz

I really hope they don't hose up my ignition.

nudude... JUST got some there! They were out the last time I checked, but I want by for another errand and they were there... look about the size of a shirt button... nickel coated.

I'll put one on each side and hope my timing/Pamco is not affected adversely.

Okay, I just placed them. MAN, they're strong! I couldn't even slide them apart... had to use a little carving knife, then slide one off of that!

They're mighty powerful, but you can get them within six inches or so of each other, so I can't imagine that the field will affect my ignition with one in front of each petcock.
