so i did the checks today for the charging system that were posted in a previous post and everything checked out. There was a small voltage drop from the switch to the brush, but with the brown wire off of the brush i was getting full battery voltage.

I did however find that one brush was worn shorter than the other. Short brush was a little less than a quarter inch. Swapped the longer brush to the positive side to see what will happen. Everything else checked out just fine so i think the brushes may be the problem. What do you guys think. I have ordered new brushes and will install them as soon as i get them. Any opinions would be appreciated.

The new brushes will work much better, for sure. Did you measure the resistance of the rotor?

When you get the new brushes installed, remember to swap them every oil change. The outer brush runs faster and further than the inner brush and wears out faster, so swapping them equalizes the wear on '80 to '83 models.

Thanks I will do that. I did check the resistance on the rotor and it was between 5 and 6 ohms, never any lower than five.

Pamcopete, when talking about the inner brush are you talking about the one closest to the middle of the rotor, because that is the one that was worn out. i will swap them every oil change though, thats a great idea.

Been riding it for two days now, and no problems with the charging, stays right around 14 volts. glad this is an easy fix, i was not looking forward to trying to find a stator and rotor.

Yes, I was refering to the outer brush, which runs further and faster than the inner brush, so perhaps your brushes were swapped earlier.
