Have read most of the previous posts but my questions are , can mounting points be made up using standard battery location and with standard carb air boxes? How work out what shock to use re length and how set up mounting point locations? Can mountings be welded in without removing engine. What recommended swingarm/shock combo. I want a lower and longer setup?

This answer is a little off the cuff but here goes: If you intended to go monoshock I doubt I would try to keep the batt box and air box because running the shock straight from your swingarm to the frame just below where the tank mounts, on the main downtube, would probably be the strongest and easiest to build. If you really want to keep the batt/airbox I would think you would have to go with an underslung design (shock running under the motor) ...which require lots of effort in designing linkage and struts to make it all work.

I would look at salvage single shocks that come from a bike of approximately the same weight as your bike will end up......A simple brace and mounts PROPERLY welded to the swingarm and frame would make it a fairly easy major modification. You can weld this on with the engine in the frame but if you are not tig welding it you need to cover your engine and anything you don't want burned with some leather.....actually leaving the engine in will help brace your frame against draw forces from welding in new pieces. And of course remove the carbs tank and any other fuel source. My $.02
