Has anyone got a good idea for removal of the lens on a speedo or tach.
Small screws vibrated loose and I need to tightend them up.

It can be done but it's a drag. On my 78 SE I had to take the speedo/tach out of the chrome case and carefully work screwdrivers(small) and needle nose pliers to take the crimp out. This process is no fun and you do chance messing your speed/tach up.

I think there maybe a thread on this and you may want to do a search.

I had the same problem with the screw vibrating out, I never was able to fix it.

I removed the metal band by prying up with a small screwdriver, but its tedious and you will nick your fingers, not a fun job. I replaced a loose screw ( use locktite) and then replaced the metal band.

Pamcopete came up with this neat method where you just cut the band and discard it.

Hi Guys,

I had the same thing happen on a trip to Montana. The face of the speedo was rotating around all the way over. Drove me nuts. I tried to take out the glass cover by use of a small screwdriver, and managed to break the glass, so I took some small screws and replaced the rivets with screws and superglue, and just took some plastic wrap and rubber-banded it over the speedo for the trip home. Once home I cut a piece of plastic to replace the glass, and carefully fitted it into the face-mount, and very carefully bent the metal back over the plastic edge, after first coating the inside with clear sealer to keep rain out.

It's kinda ugly, and I'd replace it but I sort of enjoy telling how it got that way when people ask...... Wink

Barbara;
That's great the way you can repair motorcycles, very resourceful. I suppose that almost makes men redundant Rolling Eyes

Sometimes you just have to improvise to get the job done. I had replaced leakly throttle shaft seals last year, to stop the chirping. It seemed to work last year, but this year its back with more of a screeching than a chirp. Now I know that the shaft/carb bushing is just too far worn. So, cut the finger tip out of a pair of yellow kitchen rubber gloves and clamped it to the throttle shaft part of the carb. Once again I have a quiet motorcycle. Well as quiet as these XS's can be.

RickRod

If you have trouble finding the 4" shrink tubing at a reasonable cost, PM me your address and I'll send you enough for the speedo and tach. The other advantage to this method is that you can simply cut off the tubing for future repairs or to just clean the glass.

On my cafe when ridding I have a Whistle or chirp but thought it was due to foam pods
I also have some trouble getting a steady idle
Still need to check carby balance
aybe I should do the rubber glove job & see what happens?

wally;
The outer end on the right carb shaft seems to wear more that the other 3. Easy to test if that is the source of your chirping, just put some rubber or plastic over that location.

Back to the speedometer problem: I cut the plastic housing with a hack saw all around the middle, tightened the screws with an application of loctite, JB weld'd the halves back together. It's been in use over ten years since.

That's an interesting way of doing it, might just have to try that on one of my old gauges.

Well,

2+2=2
2+2=3
2+2=4
2+2=5

All those answers are correct, if you want them to be. Make it work.

Retired Gent: Men will never be redundant! Ever, the little dears..... Very Happy

After all, there is no way I can lift an XS engine out by myself.....

I like PCPete's, "Make it work!" On my bike, I've had to bend the mount for the transfer for the hydraulics for the front brake, I have an upside-down segment from a later bike as a brake line, and I built the hi-lo switch/ horn button from an XS and a DT Yamaha internals. I built the starter button from an unused horn button, and it works just fine.

And don't even get me going about the sidecar mounts.....there isn't a rod or bar or bolt on that thing that didn't claim a fingernail, a chunk of flesh, or a piece of skin as the price of admission. Honestly, if I ever run out of things to do on that bike, I think I'll perish of surprise! Or---I could finally get some of the other bikes done, and that would be lovely! Rolling Eyes

Aren't they great? I love sitting out in the shed, not worrying a bit about what to have for dinner, just staring at Problem "X", and wondering how in the world I can build something to get around it or make it work. Throw in a warm afternoon and a beer, and life is pretty close to perfect.

And people wonder why we love these things.......

Pete,I searched all the electricle wholsaler'saround here for the 4" shrink tube,& the only place I found some was online,don't remember the site,as when I got to the price,I fell out of the chair & said F*** That & came back here. &109.00 for four feet off the stuff,and the was the smallest amount availableSo I was able to crimp mine back together the used 1 1/2 black electical tape to seal it & used as the foam vibration ring between the gauge & the cup. Not as nice as the shrink tube, but not bad either.
