When you run you timing slightly Retarded, does that also not affect your advance timing to much? i would like to retard mine slightly and see what it's like.

I also don't have a dwell meter, is .014 points gap to large, and does wider gap = more advance? questions questions.....

Just put a mark about 1/8 of an inch to the right of the F mark and time it there........on mine how it runs it the final judgment....if it gets too clanky around 2000 when I go around a corner I retard it till it doesn't do that.....although 2000 is the lowest limit......
ine is easy to adjust though with the original electronic..... and although I owned a 77 for a while I am not the expert on setting the timing with the the earlier ATU's....have to play and find out what gives the best cruise....
The way I see it ....too much retard and it gets sluggish....and too much advance it gets clanky at the moderate rpms.....need to play and make your own mark....then play around that......that's what I did......and spring tension would have to make things more challenging......

Interesting theme to this thread... my 72 runs the stock points, when I got it the timing was retarded about 1/8 of an inch from the mark. I timed it spot on and it didn't start or run as well. Ended up putting it back pretty much to where it was originally. Retarded!
I time my aircooled VW like xsJohn, more by feel than anything else. Once I have it static timed I stuff the 10mm wrench in my pocket and go for a drive. I have a long steep hill near my house, usually takes a couple of runs to get it right, no pinging on the way up in third gear, no popping on the way down and I'm done.

Thats my method mate , run it up a hill in a high gear & keep backing it off until the pinking just stops..
On one of my other XS's it needs to be backed-off double what you see in my photo..Seems theyre all slightly different..
