hi i have begun the sanding process with wet and dry on my gas tank. the top coat was black then it turns to a grey guessing a primer, then black again, then red, then bare metal. where do i stop sanding before i paint? i knw that you can use the previous paint as a base but what if there are multiple coats?

If there was n damage on the metal to begin with you could have just sanded it flat with 400grit and painted it.
Now you will need to prime and use an etch prime on the bare metal spots.

haha oh well i think im gonna sand it to the bare metal completely and paint it but leave metal showing. Can i just put clear coats on the metal when done painting?
