I have a parts engine at home with the oil filter cover bolts at the 12 & 6 o'clock positions. The shape of the cover is machined to match the engine case. I swapped it onto my '74 engine, because my cover was corroded fairly bad, and it doesn't look too lousy, just sticks out a bit.
y questions: When did the bolt holes change to the usual (to me) 9 & 3 o'clock position from the 12 & 6 o'clock, and can I interchange the covers without any stress? I bolted the cover on & it seems OK, but it'll be six weeks before it's warm enough to start it to find out if it will leak.
Anybody seen this before?

your parts engine would be a XS1 first year, bolt holes 12-6... XS2 and later 3-9

Thanks, Jayel. It seems the cover will work, I'm just obsessing because It's too cold to bother running it, and anticipation kills me.
I did the sump screen JB weld mod on it as well, and all else looks OK.
I'll move on to my headlamp & guage mods tonight.
