will the exhaust from a 77 650 work on my 82? and if not do you know why?

a 77 would be a standard D model a 82 could be a J (Standard) or SJ (Special)
the special and standard head pipes are different lenghts and bend radius, the special has a smoother rounded bend than the sharper bends of the standard, no difference in the bolt up to the head, and the mufflers are really different so are you thinking head pipes or complete system?

the mac will fit but it's not a bolt right on thing, you'll be making some brackets or hangers an it might interfer with the centerstand and or the sump plate
