To anyone who has ever wanted to take the starter out of their bike to make it a kicker only, I think I found a pretty easy fix. First of all, you have to try to find a good used bottom case from 1970 and I think 1971 was still a kicker but dont quote me on it. You will need to remove a couple of studs on your engine and replace them with longer ones that will fit the older bottom case. Be sure to use your bearings as they fit your gears and crank. It is pretty much a bolt on procedure. Finding one of those cases is the hardest part. As a bonus it will make your bike a little bit lighter and give you a slightly larger oil capacity for cooling. I am not sure if it works on the later model engines, but anything in the mid 70's should work. Anyone with a little more knowledge should be able to fill in the blanks I have left. I will also try to get a picture of the bolts you need to remove up here soon.

For neatness a sound idea..Trouble is mate, the top & bottom cases left the factory as a machined matched pair, could be in for a bit of trouble with bearing/shaft allignment if you pair up a set of differently stamped cases .. saying that though I did once buy an XS which turned out to have odd cases , ran fine apart from a leak at the front mating joint.. Blanking plate cheaper & less hassle for most

Mike's sell a kit to seal the hole the starter mounted into. Using the end cover of the starter without the starter and plugging the hole in the starter end cover is one way.
