I have a restored all stock(except pipes) 75xs.The last thing i'm doing is un-lacing and detailing the rims. They have a slight amount of corrosion spots (and i've already stripped the clear coat off).I'm thinking of having them powder coated either Black or a Gold(like the stripe on the tank).
Iv'e tried to wet sand with 400 grit and buff out the rims but the spots are too deep, and will need a soda blasting.
I'm thinking that it might take away some "show value"with black or gold rims.
What do you all think?
yself...I lean toward a gold rim.

Coloured rims will definitely detract from the 'show -bike' look & will cost you in the long run if youre trying to get top dollar for it..if on the other hand you intend to keep it then what the hell go with what looks good to you..Coloured rims can look great on a non-standard bike, powdercoat for black but anodise for gold...

If you haven't got the pits out then the powder coating will show them up...............try using a heavier grade sandpaper for a start. I had some bad scratches on my side covers and on a couple i went as heavy as 80 grit wet and dry, had to be very gentle with that, then worked out to 800 but i needed to go to 1000 at least to make it a great job instead of good........... Work your way back down the grades till you find the write size grit to start the sanding.

I guess you can say ther'e not really"pits."It's really small dark worms.
Anodizing is an option i guess, for the gold. I can get either one locally,i'm just not sure how much it is yet.
I just saw a bike with black rims... Too much black..
How bout red?

There must be someone close to you that can do a alloy/chrome type coating like this www.thermaledgecoating...ntact.html I got a quote to re coat a pair of Dunstall mufflers and the baffles for $90.00. Has different colours but the price goes up by half again.

If they absolutely won't polish up, do them black and have a gold pinstripe added, chrome spokes and detailed hub.

Very good idea!!I have until april before the bike show.
It's not really a big dollar show bike but it is real nice low (6K)miles unit, with a bare frame paint up and cleaning.
I'm going to try a stronger buffer (cheap harbor freight bench grinder) on the rims, before i go and give up.

That's it!! I like the "not too bold", lighter gold color.
Done! i'll post pics when it's back together.
Thanks!

I think the red rims and whitewalls is the best damn rim job I have ever seen. lol. I would do the same if I didnt have mag rims. Beautiful.

The problem with the red rims and whitewalls is that people watching you ride have epileptic seizures or LSD flashbacks.

My rims were corroded too, I tried to polish but no luck. I powder coated them and they came out perfect

Gmaan, I reckon we think the same, I did my rims the same. Couldn't polish out the corrosion, so a trip to the coaters took care of it. I like the look of the black on black with the silver spokes. John.
