I know some of you guys are using the Sylvania halogen light or the one from JC whitney.

With either of these can you replace the bulb only or do you have to replace the entire thing if it burns out?

I use the Sylvania H6024 halogen headlight, 40/60 watt. If it burns out you replace the entire headlight unit.

So what's the deal with the 6024XV? www.sylvaniaautocatalo...BatchId=36

It's 55/60 as compared to the 40/60, but it supposedly has a life of 850 hours compared to 320 for the 40/60watt.

40/60 would use less ... Ohms law sez watts/volts=Amps.... 40/12=3.333 ...... 55/12=4.583

That's funny. I just edited that question out b/c I found that same equation. thanks anyways Jayel.

Could a healthy charging system support the 55/60, and a boyer ignition?

55/60......Use a 6V zener diode circuit or a resistor like RG's on the hi beam and low beam (via black wire) for daytime and walk away.........switch it out for night riding it will be back to stock.......later models can use a second switch to eliminate the headlight completely for cold starts...

The ""high beam"" will be more easily seen in the daytime even cut back some.....shines more in their face............not down at the road.......black wire on the head light is ground and will do everything.....

Here is the way I did it........or make up your own.......

The Whitney unit has a replaceable bulb. It's pretty common nowadays and can be found at most auto parts stores, probably even Walmart. Your charging system should have no problem running the 55/60.

when i replaced mine with the 55/60 watt bulb, i found all the weak spots in my system. poor connections, worn brushes. stuff like that. once i got all the connections fixed, the switches cleaned up, and the new brushes with the rotor slip rins bright and shiny. i didn't have any more trouble. the J&P catalog list a replacement lense setup with a 55/60 watt main bulb with a 5 watt daytime running light all in the one lense. item #3100425 just the bulb set, $43, #3100273 $79 a complete headlight. the 5 watt my be a bit dim ,but it says dot approved.

xsleo, what you described happened to me when I installed my Boyer ignition. For a few weeks it was a true nightmare. I had to replace my rotor (Custom Rewind), and my regulator (pamcopete vr291) and found a loose connection from the alternator. ALSO, I was running into problems almost every ride due to a bad gas cap rubber seal, so I was chasing my tail on electrical and mechanical stuff and it was a darn rubber gas cap seal!

I got the H6024 40/60 watt. I don't ride in the dark much, and it has to be better than the little fairy holding a candle in front of the motorcycle that I've got now!
