What kinds of wheels are compatible with the stock xs650? I have the mags, and am having a really hard time coming up with spoked wheels. The axle I have is a 20mm. I have my own lathe and mill so I can machine stuff if needed. I am more concerned about the width of the hub. I would like to get something that will line up all nice and have the same hub width as the stock wheel. Would a regular "harley" 16" wheel work? I can make a 3/4" axle fit the swingarm easy enough.
Any help is appreciated.

That 20mm rear axle does make things tough. Other XS650 wheels and the ones off the '73-'74 TX750 are the only ones I know of that just bolt right in. Fronts from other Yamaha models of the era may swap in but you'd need to do some checking. A front wheel that used the same disc would probably stand the best chance of swapping right in. Here's a model list .....

wheeler
y '73 TX was fitted with a Suzuki rear wheel when I got it. Didn't realize it until I decided to change sprockets, chain and brakes. Not sure what model of Suzuki the wheel was from but it seemed to fit fine. It is a wire wheel but I opted to replace it with a stock Yamaha unit. I'm sure there are many options as long as you can make the connections work.....Wes

well I'm looking at a wheel off of a '75 XS. It seems to be in good shape. All I would need to get is the drum brake assembly. That would work wouldn't it. I'm guessing the axle sizes didn't change from 75 to 81.

Thanks for the help by the way.

Yes, the '75 wheel will work. If you have the '81 brake hub, it should fit in the '75 wheel as well. The castings were cleaned up slightly over the years, eliminating the tab for that electric brake wear indicator present on earlier models but the important dimensions (width, diameter) never changed.

A new brake plate was cast for '78 eliminating the tab for the brake wear sensor wire and the mount flange for the sensor itself. '78 and newer hubs therefore look the cleanest. In '77, the tab was simply sawed off at the factory and the flange for the sensor was still present but undrilled .....

So that wheel fit right on the XS with original axle and all?
