as mine ran like garbage when i first got it before i rebuilt it ...Figured this winter i would take some time to get er running tip top. SO, adjusted the shifter yesterday while the basket was out then new clutch plates. Then lowerd my needles back down to the middle position + borrowed a vacuum guage to sync the carbs. What a little powerhouse this paralell twin is. Even with my tiny back sprocket it just took off like mad. Even my friend said it sounded reallly healthy. must have been way to rich with my needles up 1. tons of midrange power now. Even holds a nice steady idle. Managed to get my timing right on too!

Really really enjoy these motors. I hope my cb500/4 brings as much joy.

I doubt that a vacuum gauge is accurate enough to sync carbs. You can make up a simple "u-tube manometer" out of clear plastic tubing. Its cheap and its very accurate.

I've got the stuff to do that right now. What fluid do you use in the tube? I've got 14 ft of tubing, I'm pretty confident I can kill the engine before fluid get's sucked in. also, if the fluid get's sucked up higher on one side, which way would you want to turn the center sync screw??

by the way, congrats on getting your bike running good. these little bikes are bad ass aren't they? I've looked and looked and looked and I can't find a new bike I'd buy. I'd buy a new one if I could find one, but even a half tuned, hard to start xs650 kills the new bikes the manufacturers are offering. They may not be faster, but they're like a motorcycle should be.....know what I mean?

The right is controled by the nut in the center of the carbs...counter clockwise reduces the speed of the right and clockwise increases the speed of right....the speed of the left is controlled by the idol stop screw on the left........really only need one guage........

Check the vacuum on the left and note the measurment.....then adjust the vacuum on the right so it is the same as the left.....adjusting the nut in the center of the carbs.......

jdallen;
You can use any fluid you wish. I used "Sta-bil" , because I just happen to have some, and its engine friendly if it gets sucked in. Something that has some colour, just makes it easy to see...................automatic transmission fluid is often used.

Automatic tranny fluid is what everybody told me to use, the viscosity is about right for the job and the color is terrific for visibility.

I was also thinking that you might want more than 14 feet of tube for this. You'll need about 8 for the loop alone, and you'll want a good 6-8 feet on each side after that for the connections to the bike. That should give you enough tube to give you suffucent reaction time if the fluid takes off up one side or the other.

I also inserted an old pilot jet into the end of each tube for resrictors to slow the action down a bit.

In all seriousness...Davida guages are very cheap in the UK...at least I think they are for what you get...

Jake;
If you want cheap..................plastic tubing is about $6.00, or 3.3 British Pounds.

Just make sure plastic tubing is petroleum compatible.
