Okay, i know how to set the valves easily...but..With one side at TDC compression stroke and one on exhaust, can you set the clearances on the intake tappet of the side thats on the exhaust stroke? or is it just transitioning from exhaust back to intake so will the intake tappet be tight?

curious to know, as my freshly built honda cb500 motor is all back together but i am unsure of that fact...(both motors are very similar as the old honda fours are like 2 paralell twins stuck together...1 and 4 travel together and 2 and 3) I think i have cam timing set correctly and i can set both tappets on 1 at TDC compression stroke and both tappets on 4 are tight (same with 2 and 3 when i do those)...seems right to me but i am unsure.

The camshaft is installed with the flat ground factory index notch (white arrow above) on the camshaft (not on the cam sprocket) facing straight up. The motor is on top dead center on overlap on number 1 cylinder (nearest) in the above image. The two visable cam lobes are both up and the rocker arms, if installed would have both the intake and the exhaust valve open on this cylinder. Number 2 cylinder (rear of image) is on TDC on the compression stroke and both the rocker arms are on the cam base circle with both lobes centered and facing down..

answerd it myself. slight overlap on the valves as your piston thats not on the compression stroke comes to TDC.
