i picked up an 80' sx650 and have had it running great...started right up no problem. Went to start it last night to bring it into the shop about midnight...pu;;ed the choke and tried to start it...nothing...choke half in...nothing...all the way in nothing...gave it a little gas ...nothing then all of a sudden BANG!!! backfire....scared the crap out of me....the wife came running and the guy across the way turned his lights on! anyway tried to start it tonight and it coughed a couple of times but it wouldnt fire....then the battery craped out...so that went on the charger for the night...
Any thoughts???????????????????
Thanks

MACE, pull the spark plugs out and see if they are wet (gas fouled) If so clean or replace them. While the plugs are out reconnect the spark plug wires to the plugs and lay the plugs against the cylinder head fins and crank the engine (electric starter) with the ignition and kill switch "on" and watch the plugs to see if you get a good blue spark across the plug gap. If so reinstall the plugs and try this method of starting your bike> With the choke all the way off start cranking the engine with the electric starter and at the same time start pulling the choke out slowly. Usually the engine will find the "sweet spot" in the fuel circuit and fire up. I have an 81xs and thats how it starts for me..................BG

All right....never seen this before. I pulled the plugs and checked the spark. The plugs look new, so the guy I got it from must have put them in.
Hit the starter and they spark a few times and then stop. ?????
So I'm thinking this is my problem.
So what would cause this?
Thanks for all the help guys.
Wish they had forums like this when I was younger...probably could have saved a lot of old bikes.

PS I do have spare electric stuff from the same year bike.

The battery holds a charge. I hit the starter and it sparks a couple of times and stops....any clues? If the battery is turning the motor over it should be sparking the whole time your hitting the starter button right??
Tried kicking a few times...nothin. Sad
Help!

Mace, I want to say it sounds like a weak coil but I'm relatively new to Japanese electrics and there are others here who have had much more experience with such problems. I know I'm not much help but if we keep bumping this question to the top eventually someone will come forward with a solid answer for ya................BG

Thanks for the bump Big George! I appreciate it.

Jayel, I will check the switch. I did use it for the first time before it started doing this...before that I was just using the key.

Thanks for all the help.
I am still interested in your thoughts....
