I've noticed that I have 2 dipsticks from 2 motors and the marks are not the same- since the cases and oiling systems are the same on all 447 motors, shouldn't the oil capacities be the same? Whats the diff, anyone know?

old motors were 2000cc late motor 2300cc you have 1 early dipstick yam dealers remarked a lot of them as they changed the case capacity before they changed the dipstick

Not to pick nits or anything, but I have a few motors around here which state "2500cc" embossed into the top case. These are "later" motors.

Best,

I guess I'll see whats stamped on the case, add that much, and see which dipstick reads correctly.
Thanks for the replies.

Yamaha got complaints about excess oil coming out the breather and revised the oil level in '75. I don't think the cases ever changed, just the amount of oil you put in them (less on later models), hence the dip stick marking change. That amount stamped on the case is for a new totally empty motor or for one after a complete teardown. You won't get that much oil in there without overfilling it on a routine oil change. And if you overfill these motors, it WILL blow out the breather (DAHIK). Here's a service bulletin .....

Well, motor is totally empty after a rebuild, so I'll go from there.
Thanks

Guys, this post got me thinking:

When I did my routine oil change after I got my '73 TX, I put in 2.5 litres, per my Haynes. I was wondering if this might have to do with my continuing oil drooling even after torquing the front sprocket nut to spec. I have not changed either seal yet as I wanted to be sure that one or both of them is leaking. I have less oil on the rear rim than before after a brief test ride, but it still drips. I have to go in again and look to see if the nut held torque (87 ft/lbs), or if one or both of the seals is leaking.

I don't want to risk blowing a seal out if I change them. And do you check oil with the bike upright and level, and warm or cold?

I check mine on the center stand cold. But I never completely fill to the top line. 1/8 to 1/4 inch low.

the book says to check oil warm, on the center stand, let set a few minutes, remove dipstick wipe clean, set back in hole with dipstick just setting on threads, not screwed in.

Could someone please tell me what height the lower motor mount bolt sits at when on the center stand? Being a hardtail, my bike lost the center stand long ago so I'm probably not getting the right reading when I check my oil.
Thanx

I think as long as the bottom of the frame/engine is parallel to the floor the level should be right. I cant tell how much your bike is raked/lowered but just make sure its level before you check it.
