I was at the Junk yard looking for a XS bike. I found a bike that looks like an XS but there was no little chrome round things around the engine like most XS engines. BUT this bike had a Twin engine...it had two carbs, two pipes coming out of 2 exhaust ports, so on.....So what type of bike is this.....TX maybe....it's chain driven....but I dont know..

thanks for the welcome, but I could not grab a picture....This Bike had the frame of a XS model bike.....but the engine had a rectangular cover where the round one would go. It also had a cover over the starter...

Can we assume it is a 1970s vintage Yamaha twin? 4-stroke? If so, there are really only three choices besides the XS/TX650. The XS400, TX/XS500 or TX750. All three have "XS frames." Below are links to examples of each.

y money's on the XS400. But when you're referring to a "square cover", if you're referring to the valve covers on the engine, all XS650s and TX650s from '72 and later have a square valve cover on the left front of the motor, while the other three are round. Only the 70 and 71 year models have round covers for all four valve positions.

Best,

You know, you may be right! It has to be an 80's model. It looks like the XS400 Special. Im happy has hell because the engine isn't looked up, and it's been sitting out at the junk yard for Years....since 92 or so. I kicked the kick start and you can here it turn over.....the guy want 350 for the tank, and the whole cycle.... Now ? for you guys... I want a sports bike out of this girl....and to get the engine started what do you guys susggest that I start out fixing.

I'm not sure I'm understanding what you just wrote. The seller wants $350 for the tank? Or for the tank and the whole cycle?

Where abouts do you live? Maybe somebody here has one they'll make you a good deal on.

y advice? Don't get smitten. Assuming it's an XS400, if it's been sitting out in the elements for 16 years, it has very little value. Does it have a title? Even with a title, and the bike is almost all there, I wouldn't give $350 for an XS400 that's been sitting in the weather for 16 years. I wouldn't give that much for an XS650, far as that goes. Well, maybe for a very early XS1 that is complete and has been under a tarp or something. Smile

y advice. Save your coins. Pay attention to craigslist.org and the local wantads and eBay for deals in your area, and just ask around. Keep saving your coins. Then when a decent, running XS650 comes along at a price you can afford, go for it. They're out there. I bought my running '81 for $600. Others here have bought runners for far cheaper. You'll find that if you pay a bit more for a clean bike, in the long run, you'll have saved money, cuz it seems like it always costs more to get the bike up to that running standard than if you would have just bought one already in that shape.

Best,

ichael

I used a utility called Craig's Helper (craigshelper.com) to find the following two listings in Craig's List. I found more XS650s than these two in your general geographical area, but the others' owners were way too proud of them. These two have very good possibilities, however.

topeka.craigslist.org/...37986.html

lincoln.craigslist.org...73386.html
