I am slowly beginning to look for a project bike to build a Tracker. What is the best year range to look at for this type of build? I think I have seen just about every year in Tracker form, but what is the easiest/best for this type of build?

1979 XS650F- Last of the breed in the US
What a coincidence I own a 1979 XS650F
I break myself up.
I would look for a standard with spoke wheels. Just my opinion.

Depends on what type of wheels you want and the type of brakes you want to run.

I'd say a '77 to '79 Standard. '77 was the first year for the 35mm diameter forks. To me, Standards just look better for trackers and cafe projects than Specials, mostly 'cuz of the rear shock geometry.
Best,

Naw...they are a lightweight tubeless spoke wheel....690 apiece....custom colors available...not worth the money but cool nonetheless

In my opinion 74-79 standards, just due to the handleing carractoristics of haveing a 18" rear wheel. Flat truith is 16" wheels dont handle the twisties anywhere near what the 18" wheels do. Now however if you only cruse beaches and boulivards and like that fat sidewall look then go special just stay out of the throttle and my way in the canyons.

I would build just about any xs I found...no xs-1 xs-2 or tx though...not as many options available...I enjoy the 16 inch rear mag..looks good, better than an 18 lookswise plus disc brake...I have heard many testimonials about the 18" performance though...that is what is cool about customizing...make it just how you like it...XS bikes rule
