Some new pics with the side covers all painted up. Only about 50 more miles and I'll change the break-in oil, retorque the headbolts and I'll finally be done.
I'm going to try putting some foam rubber insulation on the center spine under the gas tank. The XS750 tank has a rattle when going down the road. If I grab it with my knees it stops.

She can be a little bit cold natured, too. The plugs look about perfect to me, but I may try running the K&N cones and/or bumping the mains up one notch to see if that helps.

Fantastic job, Scott!

Hey when you were locating the tank, did you have to take into account the bars at full lock when positioning it? Or are your bars high enough that they clear the tank? Even though I'll be installing superbike-style bars on mine, I haven't selected the mounting points yet for my 750 tank because of this. The frame is still disassembled, and I figured I should wait until I have the rolling chassis together with bars attached before I finalize the tank location.

Best,

ichael

Thanks Guys!
Cooltouch, the Clubmans are from Mikes and they clear the tank. If I go full lock to the left, the fork will slightly touch, but if I'm that far gone on the road I'm in big trouble anyway!

Tweedy, do you have some vibration/noise from your tank on the frame? I used the factory rubber bumpers but think I'll put some foam pipe wrap down the spine to stop the noise.

Hey Scotts, awesome ride! I love what you did with the XS750 tank. I also have an Omar's seat and you're right, worth every penny. I don't yet have a 750 tank to see, but how hard was it to get it to fit? Does it use the stock pin location in the back? You mentioned everything had to be moved back an inch, does that also mean you had to cut the stock location of the rear pin and move/weld it back as well?

Beautifull! I like the louvered side covers, got me thinking about the stator / alternator cover on the left side. That would be a nice addition. I believe I'd buy one.

The paint job on that tank is awesome. If you don't mind saying, can you give me an idea of the cost of painting it and what part of the country you're in? I have a tank I want custom painted, but have no clue of what kind of cost may be involved if I have it done professionally. Thanks, -dan

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but I can tell you that I do body work and paint here in West Virginia (30+ years) and I can tell you that good paint products and good work are not cheap. I did my '79 in a candy red ghost flame job over silver metalflake and I spent 200.00 in paint and clear alone. I forgot to ask myself how much I charged me, but I'd have to have close to a thousand to do it again. I've heard of higher prices locally for custom paint work. I don't have a picture on this computer of the bike, but it is #1077 on the 650motorcycles.com website. I've changed the tires and exhaust since that picture though.

Hey guys...sorry for the slow response. This thread has been dormant for a while and I just now saw the new posts.

Natemeins, here's a thread I did about mounting the tank:

xs650temp.proboards29....820&page=1

It's really not that hard. The onlything I've done since then is to add a piece of foam on the backbone of the frame. The underside of the tank was rubbing just enough to make an annoying vibrating sound when riding the bike. I used some foam pipe wrap from Lowes...costs me about two bucks!

5Bikes..thanks for the compliment. On the paint job: I stripped the tank to bare metal myself. I then sanded the tank and seat with 400 grit and took it to my local bodyshop. They sprayed the primer and I brought it home and wet-sanded/prepped it myself. I took it back and he laid out the scallops and painted the tank and added the pinstripe for me.
He charged me $300 for the tank and seat.
