That motor is looking GREAT!!! Love the black accents on it. I am thinking about some black on mine to tie it into the rest of my bike.

The side covers and valve adjuster covers are primed with etching primer and dupli-color wrinkle finish paint. works fine if you use the right technique and a heat gun, but takes forever to dry all the way to the bottom. with a little practice it comes out nice and even. Everything is either new, replated, or repainted. Base/clear automotive paint on the cases, spray bomb engine paint on the head and cylinders. Points covers are just originals that still look good.

I see the regulator and rectifiers but what is the purpose of the component with the yellow wires? Is it a transistor?

That's a diode- I'm running a little itty bitty battery and I don't want it to charge too fast so i have a resistor inline with the battery-but i want full battery voltage available for the ignition system when starting(kick only) so the diode bypasses the resistor when it's not running.
The regulator is the old jeep unit and the rectifiers are the radio shack units that pamcopete (of XS650 Garage fame)recommended-This stuff is outlined
here:Regulator Alternative
And here:Rectifier Setup

These threads are REALLY long- but all the info is there, you just have to wade through it to learn what you need.

Sorry Irish, I didn't see your question until today for some reason(6 weeks late.....) The letters and tuning forks are stickers under clearcoat, the white/black stripes and number panels are painted.
Should be done with this thing in a week or 2, work has been busy, limiting "play with the Yamaha" time.
Started it up this week and all the wiring is done and functional, getting real close.

I never had a favorite number, beings that spot is for a number it looked kinda bare after i painted it. So i put 79 on there so i wouldn't forget what year the bike was. At my age ya start forgetting crap like that. Laughing

Maybe 77 then? I dunno, I'll deal with that as soon as I deal with the speedometer and fuel tank.
You are right- at about 40 years old your brain is full, anything new that you learn is at the expense of something you used to know. Learn something new/forget something old.

I don't drag race, but I still like knee dragging on the street. After way too long on cruisers, it's fun to be back on a performance oriented bike!

Compared to what I did have, it isn't that lunatic, Irish. I was riding a Kawasaki Drifter and got real tired of scraping footboards. The XS leans pretty good.
