I finally got a chance to get my 72 torn down. After draining the oil and checking the filter I found metal flakes in the filter. What should I be looking for? I have the whole thing appart now so I should be able to get to everything, I just don't know where to start looking.

Try a magnet on the metal flakes ... if they stick - steel ........... if not - aluminum.

If steel .... prob starter gear flakes (grinding noise) .... if aluminum it is probably the cam chain guide or tensioner.

A few flakes is nothing to worry about ... check filters more often.

So, what does the magnet test tell ya? Any black plastic pieces?

The front cam chain guide is the usual suspect.
