I would like to remove the bracket that is tacked to each side of the gas tank of my 1980 special before I re-paint. Anyone done this successfully? Any tips or suggestions?

Remove it? I just hammered the tabs in, couple spots welds and filled
it with bondo. Still looks good after ten years.

I did the same, used a body hammer to lightly tap down into the recessed area and used duraglass filler, lot less trouble than trying to remove them.
