OK, I got to ride an 04' CBR600RR a week ago, then today got to ride an 06' R1 with a micron exaust and k&n drop in filter. The 600 was scary, it was way too happy trying to be on the rear wheel. It scared the living hell out of me to be truthful.
I got to ride the R1 today and i have to say 3 things are said over and over when test riding this machine... "Waaaay toooo faaaast!!!", What The F*!", and the one I am still asking myself is, "Why???!!!".
I honestly am apalled that something like this is available to the general public with nothing more than a drivers endorsement. A learners permit and a fat wallet will let you ride one home from the dealer brand new. (The owner of the R1 did just that, its his first bike!)
So basically, anyone else ever ride one? Own one? Pulling the throttle open to accelerate into traffic in the middle of Madison the damn thing pulled the front wheel off the ground in 2nd gear at 30mph like it was nothing. What do you need anything like that for?? Whats the point?? Can anyone explain why you would like to ride something that you can never use all of? (Exceptions being track days)
I just don't understand the need for something like that. I built MY 600 class Super Sport whatever ya want to call it, XS Interceptor, for the sole reason that I LOVE tourqe, but I dont need to do 120mph in 3rd to enjoy it.
I also enjoy flickable bikes like the TZ250 and FZR400. So, why if your reasons are for the ultimate handling, braking, styling, are you turning to race replicas for these attributes? The 80's and 90's were filled with beutiful bikes that can quench the thirst for speed that almost any performance junkie could have.
It just seems to be like the crowd that owns race replica's also dont have a clue what lead the the development of the machine they ride, the preceding models of that exact name. You say Hurricane around CBR guys and they think Katrina!
Help me out, why own 10 times more bike than you could handle/use on the street?

Had a gsxr750, and a Hayabusa, both faster than said bikes respectively. Loved em. Should every noob out there have one, no. Should have to take special licenses to get one. I am mature and 34, so I never pulled wheelies or any of that crap on the street. I guess you could also ask why would you want a Honda Civic with 200HP. Why would you want a Lamborqini? I believe the answer is because you can. I love speed, and the XS has tamed me. My busa was faster than my bike in the first two gears.

This same question - a good and valid one - is asked a lot on the Kwak forum I frequent. My main (and first) bike is an '05 Ninja 250R with Supertrapp race cans. Love her to bits... she never ceases to amaze me... one of motorcycling's best kept secrets.

Basicly any of the 600 and above crotch rockets are just that, freaking rockets. My brother brings his busa to the track quite a bit, it's got a few mods and NOS and he's real close to getting it into the 8's in a quarter mile. I ran high 9's on it taking off easy. It's scary fast and a bit much for the street but he and his buddies always had fast bikes. I was 16 when he bought a new 72 H2 750, man that thing would scare the crap outta me but i loved it. I see alot of kids on these rockets and wonder if they can really handle it, unfortunately some can't. Been quite afew bite it this summer around here. A 17 year old kid down the road had a new 600 honda RR, i asked his dad what he thought of it, he said it's only a 600. I asked him if he had rode it, He hadn't. The man had no idea how fast that bike is that his boy was ripping the road up with. I told him to crack on it himself sometime, a week later it was in the front yard for sale. Must'a got the old mans attention.

Yeah, I was told "Its only a 600" by alot of people and after the CBR I got to climb on. I have one thing to say back to owners of them, "Its only a casket".
When a bike will do wheelies without any rider skill or control, that is likely to get all kinds of people killed. I lost 5 diffrent friends to road rockets this summer.
I have been riding for 5 years and the aforementioned bikes were the first time on a sportbike of any type in my life. I started on a 125YZ and moved slowly up to my 650 I have now. Your as ignorant as a rock if you think that a 600 is a starter bike.

Hi speeds is whats got most of'em around here. It's bad enough running 60 or 70 mph and see a car pull up to an intersection and hoping like hell they see ya. You crank one of these to 140 or so, they see a bike a good ways off and pull out, your on top of'em in seconds. Even an expirenced rider can run out of talent real quick. I guess if we can send an 18 year old kid to iraq and dodge bullets, bombs, or what ever, they got the right to ride the fastest thing on the road.

They way I understand it, the R1 is built for acceleration and the R6 is built for speed. I don't think the R6 will lift up the front like an R1 is. You still have to be very careful though.
