I noted reference to installing a replacement for our stock 650 temporary magnet charging system.....the permanent magnet alternator and regulator system from a RD/RZ-250/350/400 can be substituted. Yamaha 650 Society News this month. (#277) refers to an interesting article in the SX 650 Club of Australia www.xs650.org.au/alternators.htm
Charging sytem woes of the stock temporary magnet system seems to be an all too common chink in the reliability armor of our 650's. Just as it can be with a lot of aircooled engines of the era. Airhead Beemers for example. (Enduralast makes a nice permanent magnet based system for the airhead BMW's by the way.)
Does anyone have experience with this replacement idea (or others) using a permanent magnet based brushless system and/or specifics of how to go about the replacement/conversion??? There are a lot of interesting possibilities with such a system......running without a battery or with a dead one even for example. Brushless also BTW

I have 45,000 on the battery excited stock stuff down there......Well replaced the rotor at 8, 000....When I bought the bike....the biggest killer is the heat in there....said it plenty of times but if you open the cover with spacers and longer screws it will save a bunch of money and charge better at the same time......70 degrees difference........
If you really want to talk about a problem check the right cylinder and you may find it running 25 degrees hotter than the left.....that will cost plenty too eventually........
