Hey all. I know it's not a 650, but what do you think of the SR500? I have a chance to get a complete bike with title for $50. It has the mags and disc brakes all around. Currently been sitting for 3 yrs, but ran when parked. Supposedly has some sort of charging issue. Let me know what you all think.

Rode one of those a month ago at least I think it was...Is that the one with the oil that goes in the frame and has no electric start and a sight glass on the head to help align it for kickstarting......If so it ran real good ...bit clanky but handled good.....would be good for going for beer or a dual purpose runner to the campsite and to town and sorts......Owner had to start it for me...reminded me of my old goldstar a bit with all the torque...

Guess I'll get it, and see if I can get her running again. Didn't take me long with the xs, but we'll see. I figure it can't be too much slower than the xs seeing as it is half a litre bike. We'll see what the internet has to offer.

it won't burn up the super slabs but find some backroads and you'll enjoy I had a xt500 (damn why did I ever sell it) lot of 350 Harleys and rode some 441 victors, if you look in the dictionary under the definition of fun there's a picture of a big single

The old SR is a cult bike over here, theres a couple in my village , theyre ideal round our little country lanes....cost a bomb though,my neighbour just bought one 2 weeks ago for £700 ($1400) and its pretty rough cosmetically & needs a rebore etc.
I'd like one but Im not paying that for one! I can remember when you couldnt give em away!

I've had one for over 20 years. Other bikes have come and gone - that one always stayed. It's an old honest, real motorcycle. It was my fav before I discovered the XS.
There's a Minton article even better than the XS one for them.
So as not to muck up this 650 forum, PM me if you get it and I'll clue you in on them. They were marketed for 4 years here but much longer elsewhere. A spoke wheel conversion is the hot mod (less weight and looks better).

Here is my $40 gem. It is missing a few things, but nothing that can't be replaced. It seems to have compression which is a start. Looks like I can use stuff off of it if I can't get it running easily. Front rim for sure, rear looks to have a huge sprocket on it though. Needs some work, but could be a good future project.

even tho' you got it for 10 bucks less than the fifty I'll stand by my offer of 55 --- nice looking bike needs a little TLC but beauty is only skin deep, get it running and I think you'll have a keeper you can pretty it up later yeah the rear sprocket is bigger on those, different gearing, I wouldn't go pulling parts off of it keep it original worth way more like that

Got her fired yesterday for a few minutes. Has some carb problems. Kicked her for over an hour. You guys with kick start only are nuts. It about wore me out. I guess if you keep them tuned you are alright. One thing out, and you will go bonkers trying to kick it.

Maybe an xs rear wheel would somehow fit to relieve the huge rear sprocket syndrome and give more choices........My RT1 360 didn't have the close ratio gear box like the xs and geared two on the front and 4 off the back and I rode it all over FLA for 10 years on the express and in the woods and never had any issues like the xs does.....Would go 70 all day and never complain......

The SR doesn't have the power to pull a much smaller rear sprocket. The common mod is to go 1 tooth up on the countershaft.
The 650 wheel won't fit due to axle size and you wouldn't want it anyway. It has no rubber damping pucks in the sprocket mount.
The spoked wheel conversion is very popular and the 650 front is the direct bolt-in swap. For the rear, the direct bolt-in is the XT500 rear wheel. You don't want the TT wheel because, like the 650's, it has no damping pucks in the sprocket mount.

Bound to have as much power as my RT1 360....Used solid mount mx wheel on it for 60000 miles or so....Second RT1 had the rear wheel dampners and was smoother...Raised the gears 2 on the front and down 4 on the back.......I am a lite weight though.......Even rode enduros a few times double with that gearing....Never won one that way though....I am geard 18/29 on my XS and looking at mikesxs's new taller 5th gear wheel.....Forgot to tell that I live on top of a mountain and only ride it down the hill in 5th......4th still pulls me up it....5th should be a sustainer to keep the revs down limited to a point to how well the bike is tuned, aerodynamics and how fat your tail is.....
Land speed records for 125cc are at or near 120 mph........

I know this still isn't a SR forum, but I've got no where else to go right now. It seems that with 10 less HP, and 100LBs less weight, the gearing should be closer to the XS. Is there a way to convert the rear mag for the XS? It looks like they use the same rear caliper, and the swing arm is eerily similar too. The guy I got it from said he had the title, and I am currently waiting to see if he can find it before I decide what to do. I already have it stripped to the frame, motor, and wheels.

it's not just the drive sprockets that effect the gearing the trans gears are different also, that why it uses the big rear sprocket

I had thought I had read somewhere that the 5th gear was actually an overdrive in this bike. .77:1 or something like that. Makes more sense now.

Hard to find specs on final drive specs on these......Guess you just have to drive it and see if you like how it acts on the highway.........Or count teeth...But this would still relate to crank gear and clutch gear ratios......
Close ratio and wide ratio trans are definately different.......Most of the close ratio trans I have owned have 4th and 5th closer to third.....Wide ratio on my enduro bikes have higher 4th and 5th in relation to the lower gears.......xs is close ratio....dang it......
Who knows what they did until you run it.........
