I was out riding the other day when my bike left me stranded along the roadside. When I finally got it home and started checking everything, I found the advance unit came loose. I put it back together ,but it won't start. Seems like it's out of time. I don't understand how this can be!?

Be sure you've reinstalled the advancer in phase with the ignition cam. An eyeball on the points and timing marks will tell the whole tale there. It's not unlikely you'd have to retime, though; the advancer is the only thing securing the ignition shaft, so timing could well have drifted when things got cinched up again. The pins are only there to get alignment in the ballpark.

Well, I checked the rotor fire mark and both points were open.I'm not sure what to do. The advance unit is all in place,I think? All the pins are lined up.

Sorry to be so long getting back to you; missed your last post. Have you checked the timing with a VOM or continuity tester? That's all I can think of offhand--that timing may well have drifted a bit when things got tightened up again.
