Which front brake rotors fit a later, post '76, XS650? I know Yamaha used the same rotors on various models/years. I want to replace my front rotor on my '79 - what should I look for?

THINK XS1100 AND THE 1100 MAXIM IN THE EARLY 80'S USED THE SLOTTED LARGE ROTOR IN FRONT AND THE XS 750 USED THE SMALL SLOTTED IN THE REAR and front. I HAVE A EARLIER POST ABOUT THESE IF YOU CAN FIND IT. Be sure to use the later slotted ones the stop much better and dont squeel. You can look at the oblong holes around the inside of the rotor. The more square holes are the smaller ones and the more oblong holes are the larger ones. xs650 used the large ones in the front and the smaller ones in the back. ebay

A couple of years ago I did a bunch of research in an attempt to find a lighter rotor for less cost. I ended up with a rotor from eBay that was marketed as a "80 XJ 550." It was thinner that my stock one (~5mm as I recall) and has slots. It works well for me, and I have attached a picture.

The real key is the bolded text below.

I did a post on this on the wiki with my results - it is listed below.

-Matt Q

650wiki.org/index.php/...isc_Brakes

Existing rotors can be Blanchard Ground to eliminate grooves. Most larger cities should have a precision grinding shop with a Blachard Grinder. Normal cost for this is $20 to $25. According to the Clymer manual, the minimum allowable thickness is 6.5mm.

It is also possible to use rotors from an XS 1100 for the 1977 - 84 years of the XS 650. 1980 - 82 models of the XS 1100 came with slotted rotors.

80-81 SR500 G/H rotors will also fit the 1977 - 84 years of the XS 650. These rotors are 5.0mm thick.

The following is a list of rotors that I believe to fit the 77-84 XS: (Matt Q.)

81-83 XJ 550 Seca and Maxim

80-83 XJ 650 Maxim

81-83 XJ 750 Seca

81-83 XV 750 Virago

83 XV 920 K

Please note that this is based from a possibly flawed cross-reference list. Check that the outer diameter is 298mm, and the appearance is similar to your rotor. Please note that many of these are under the recommended minimum thickness of 6.5mm.
EBC sells a lightweight replacement rotor that is 5.0mm thick and can often be found for about $200.

ike's XS also sells a lightweight replacement rotor that is 4.0mm thick. The kit from Mike's XS comes with spacers to correctly align the caliper.

5twins, I thought I did some checking and had some questions about the 78 and 79 SR500s. As I recall, I could not find a difinative answer either way. I'll update the wiki with a note about the 78 and 79.

Sparklow, be sure to let us know what you end up with. If something works, let's add it to the wiki.

Bought an eBay front brake rotor for my '79 XS. This one is from a 1982 Yamaha Maxim 650 YICS and although I have not mounted it yet, it looks to me to be a good fit, it is in great shape and it should work well. I would rather have found one of those nice factory XS1100 slotted rotors that xsjohn mentioned in his post but this one will work fine for now as I want to get the front end of the bike (also fitting new tapered steering head bearings) back together. Thanks to all who replied for your interest and help!

The XS1100 seems like the perfect setup for a dual disk front wheel -
the only catch might be matching up a left caliper.

I have an XS1100 disc with a XS850 caliper. Pics are in my gallery. I got the hose locator thingy from Northwest cycle

Excellent! Was the alignment a problem?

No alignment issues. But be aware you need to unbolt one of the calipers to pull the wheel. Either that or lift the front end way up in the air.
