G'day folks, I've just ordered a set of High Performance clutch plates from Mikes, anyone have any experience with them? The stock set I got last year didn't even last a full season. I just had my clutch pack out to have a look and the fibre plates are fried, the steels look fine.

When I put it back together I added a extra steel plate in the middle of the pack, seems to fit ok, anybody tried this before?
Cheers

Well although not talked about much anymore, when I install a new clutch I ALWAYS soak the fibre plates in the same oil and viscosity weight I plan to run in the bike at least 24 hours before the actual installation. I dont know if it is necasary with modern plates but it nuse to be recomended alot with the early brittish bikes, and I have always done it. also I would be getting some heavier clutch springs if you installed a clutch last year and added a plate and its gone now , I would definately be getting heavier springs.

Replaced mine last summer, used stock stuff & heavy duty springs from Mikes xs. Works great, like Roy says, soak`em overnight.

5twins this proceedure use to be done freaquently when one had a clutch that was marginal to the worn side of specifications and not having money enough to replace a whole clutch , alot of times it would get you through the season.

I put Barnett plates and springs in my xs......I don't really think the plates are any better, nor the springs as compared to the mikes high performance springs.....it seems plates are plates....clutch still works good after 5000 miles but the springs aren't what they were when new....time for a new set.....definitely gotta soak those plates before installation...I can't say I've ever had a problem with clutch drag except when it was maladjusted....I had some sh#thead mess with my lever adjuster once and I had no clutch so I always use a tool to crunch em tight...gotta watch out for gremlins

Yeah clutch drag can be a real drag! Very Happy especialy as mines a Freddy Flintstone start! Gotta make up a roller starter for this year (though I've been saying that for a while)

I didnt realy think the extra steel plate would increase drag as when a clutch is disengaged its disengaged right?
I thought if I added the extra steel plate it would effect the clutch when engaged, reducing the opportunity to slip???

Yes I have a few different sets of cluth springs and will use the best I have. I also have some RD LC springs somewhere, maybe they'll fit??
I'll dress up the fingers on the basket before reassembely, though they're not to bad at the mo.

Also speaking of clutches did you know that there are 2 different scroll screws (where the clutch cable connects)on the XS, 1 being considerably thicker than the other, offering more travel for your buck!

On the later version, the worm part was much wider, pretty much fully engaging the worm portion of the rotating male gear. I'm thinking this was changed to better and more fully support the male gear, especially with the increased lift and side force exerted by the long arm.

Being thicker, it sends the shaft deeper (sounds like I' writing a porno script!) giving more clutch action!
aybe an adustable push rod would be a good thing?????
