Guys, a question about my chain on my 1980. It has 9,000 miles and I believe the original chain. I took it off today, probably the first time it has ever been removed. What I need to know is how much play in the chain is OK. I stretched it out and pulled on one end of it. It moved about an inch before the other end moved. Is that within tolerance?

Thanks,

Dave

i would say it's junk it shouldn't have any noticable end to end slop, what do the sprockets look like? any wear or hooking on the teeth? (most noticable on the countershaft sprocket) new sprockets are cheap and while a new chain will set you back about $70 it's good insurance for not setting on the side of the road or busting cases when it wads up and takes a new route thur the side cover

I haven't looked that carefully at the sprokets yet, they need to be cleaned a lot before I can assess them. Thanks for the advice on the chain. After 26 years, it's probably time for a change.
