I've got a pipe rattle inside my STock 81 pipes. Sound Like it's coming from mid-pip - right about where the pipes flare for the mufflers. I have taken the pipes off and turned them upside down and shaken them - but I think what ever is rattling is stuck behind the baffles.
Is there any way to take these pipes apart?
(so they can be put back together again)

Don't like to hear this....still have the stock ones myself......Maybe ebay....Could a big sheet metal screw from the outside where you couldn't see it.....screw in from maybe a thick part on the muffler and jam the loose part or cinch it toward the screw....Can you tell right where the rattle is....39,000 on my stocks....my time is coming........

No - at this point it's a guess +/- 6 inches - I've got one bum ear - so it makes pinpointing it even harder. It's not awful - the bike still runs fine - and doesn't sound bad - the ticking sound is just annoying - sounds like I'm low on oil - but it's coming from the pipes not the engine.
I could hear it rattle around when I shook the pipes off of the bike.
I also think it changed my back pressure slightly - it's the only thing I could think of for my "slightly different" carb problems I was having last year (too rich on the plugs).
Found out that 1.5 to 1.75 works great for idle mixture (keeping the plugs clean)
at 2 they start turning black. Went back to standard heat range plugs too.
I am probably a little rich in the middle range - it runs great - but gets about 40 in town instead of 50. Don't do much hwy driving to know what he hwy mpg is lately.
thanks
Jim

Sounds like the baffle is coming loose/rusting out. Not much you can do but replace the mufflers.
