Latest project me and a friend are working on. Just started getting into xs650's lots of fun so far. We recently finished up a custom turbocharger set up on my Harley Vrod earlier this summer. I designed the frame jig the bike is assembled on and had a good friend machine the parts for assembly at a shop i use to work at. Well anyways here is pics of the build so far. frame is streched 6 in out back and there will be lots of custom one off parts on the bike. I just got done making some handle bar clamps they use they stock mounting rubber dampners and allow use of 1 1/8 Pro taper motocross bars which are available in all kinds on bends and pull back. We are designing some cool foot pegs and forward controls right now. Just slapped the forks on quick for the pics and then it went back up on the jig. Let me know what you guys think. thanks

Wow. Great eye for lines. Those rails are beautiful and the ends with the axle plate...smoooooth. Any chance of getting a close up of the axle plates?
The only problem I can see is that over time you will see some bend and therefore sag in the rear due to the bends in the upper seat rails. The triangular nature of the seat rail/lower rail/rear downtube seen in your basic hardtail is for maximum strength. The more you push the envelope, the more you sacrifice strength.
I'm not saying it will bend a soon or by how much, but it will happen. With all the vibration and stress that a rigid takes, it's absolutely inevitable with your design. And maybe all of this is stuff you know. Take it as it is; just an observation by a passionate enthusiast and back yard builder with some experience.
Whatever! Do it! I can't wait to see it finished too. One of the nicest looking frames I've seen in a while, brother! This is going to be a head-turner for sure. More pics!

The mocked up seat height is 16.5" you can basically touch you hand on the ground when sitting on the bike. Should be cool. We are going to rake it out a bit yet as well. I'll keep the pics coming.

Excellent! I was really hoping for some rake on this to even out the rear stretch.

Rear end is built from 1.25" Chromoly tubing. Way stronger than regulrar dom steel tube.

Dirka, it is part of the territory, and I'm for it. As I said, it was just an observation and in no way a criticism or discouragement. That being said, with it being 1.25" chromoly, that makes a world of difference.

I think its crazy low, but its actually visually exacerbated by that big 18 inch rear tar.
I think it should be a wee bit higher and have a 15 like a lot of cruisers do, of course that will then look like a normal person would be its owner, not bad ass outlaw biker denizen of doom #454 Ryno.
Yea ...
Cool.
Srinath.

Here are some finished build pics. Actually iy does have XS650 parts on it! I almost forgot the scoops i molded into the airbox cover are two front fenders off an xs and a massaged them to flow with the tank lines.

The axle plates are actually the stock ones, I cut them out of the swingarm and cleaned them up a bunch. I Like how small they are, and they fit the lines that we wanted to use. I'll take a few pics tonite too.
Here's a couple of pics of the stock chunk of the frame in the jig that we made.
In case anyone is wondering, I'm the other half of Ryno454's build.

Really great work. Those fit perfectly. I'm really psyched to see this bike finished. (Beautiful welds, by the way.)

Ryno454, My concern with this bike is the design of the hardtail. On a normal hard tail the top tubing is straight, (so gives the greatest strength), the bottom tube reinforces the top and stoops it from folding due to the enormous stress of not having a sprung back end................. The frame at the bend on the top at the back of the motor, (top yellow), is where all the stress is being directed, ...........The frame at the bend behind the motor at the bottem (Yellow) is where stress is being directed......Because you have no webbing or braces, (and both bends run the same way) there is nothing to stop the frame collapsing at those bends.
I may be missing something here or maybe you don't intend to ride the bike or you have some other way to strengthen the hard tail.

Yes 650skull, excellent point ... the narrower spread between the 2 and the fact that they are bending instead of taking an axial load.
Cool.
Srinath.

Rear end is not completed yet. there will be supports and other gussets. like i said the tubing is 1.25' chromoly steel. 3 times stronger than 1" dom. You'll see when its a little further along. Rear dropouts are not completed yet either. there will be blinkers dropped in the upper tube ends flush and the bottom is getting trimmed to flow with the frame.
