I got the Yamaha started today!!!! Talk about being shocked, I wasn't quite sure what happened when it roared to life (literally) on the second kick. After it being in pieces for 2 years, new carburetors from eBay that I hadn't even cleaned yet, a strange home built ignition and exhaust, I didn't really expect it to start without some effort.
Still a lot to do to be ready to ride, suspension adjustments, fine tune the ignition and carbs, gel battery, finish the side covers, but it's getting close.
If all goes well with the first few rides, I'll get started on the final motor mods. I have the ported head back, just needs valves, need a cam and springs and pistons to bore to 700cc, then all done.

That's awesome man! I've enjoyed watching this build, and that bike should be a blast to race when finished! Hope to be at that point with you in another year or so

I primarily built it for track days, but plan to give the over 40 Light weight CMRA class a try. Not sure if anyone will call what I do with it racing......

Finally got the valves, guides and HP springs in to complete the head, asked Santa for JE 77mm pistons, so closing in on the finish. Last step is a cam when the wife isn't bogarting the credit card.......

Are the rims identical, front and rear? Did you lace them yourself? How did you choose the tires?

Yes, yes, and MMM.
I relaced the rear using the stock rim and spokes, just to freshen it up. The front has an 18" rear rim on it, using spokes from an XS 360, I had to drill the hole angles slightly different to line-up. The tires are Avon 110/80-18 AM22 front, 130/650-18 AM23 rear, as recommended for racing/track use by Michael Morris at 650 Central. Sweet tires!
I have the chassis complete and hope to get the new parts on my recently ported head so I can begin the final engine work. The engine internals are stock at the moment, but I'll be adding the reworked head, 77mm pistons and a Megacycle 30 cam through the winter, then I can beging to ride this sucker.

Thanks, but really it was way easier than most think. It helps that my folks had a Yamaha shop in the 70' - 80's.

I've been tinkering on this one for 2-1/2 years, a little at a time. I've saved a bundle shopping on eBay, but still, I'm $6k into this beast so far.
I'm just afraid I'll wad it at the track, no way I can do this again.

IS the engine tilted slightly forward? Is so how did you do it and is there potential for oil starvation?

No change to the motor location or mounts. The forward tilt in the picture is a combination of raising the rear by changing the shock mounting position and having the forks compressed by the tie-downs holding it on the bench.
Tilting the motor would improve front wheel weighting, buy I'm entirely too lazy to attempt that.

Ported head is in the shop to get the new guides honed to fit the SS valves, and Santa is bringing me a set of JE 700cc pistons. Need to send the cam to Megacycle for grinding soon. Hope to tear down the motor for final modifications early in the new year.

Now just have to decide on head gasket thickness, thinking a copper 0.032" will workout.
