I went to check on my '83 yesterday. It needed tires and a tune-up so I towed it straight from the P.O.'s house to my local bike shop.
The valves were WAY out of adjustment, but other than that it passed with flying colors. I would normally try doing minor tune-up stuff myself, but I'm ready to ride and just had them give it a good once over.
It has good compression and now has fresh oil and filter and the aforementioned valve adjustment. They also checked and adjusted the cam chain tensioner, tweaked the carbs and lined the tank. Oh, and fresh spark plugs. It runs like a whole 'nother bike now! That's the good news.
The not so good but sorta expected news is that it needs a chain and sprocket and steering head bearings. Sorta expected for a 24 year old bike. They'll be doing the tapered bearing conversion for me and changing the fork oil. I also ordered a fork brace and new rear shocks. Should ride real nice with the new tires.
The wheels are slightly off, but he was able to balance the tires on them and said I probably won't notice it, but will need to have the wheels relaced and some point down the road.
Next up is fresh paint and a lot of elbow grease!
Should be riding next week....woo-hoo! Pics when I get them.....

Congrats. I hope you were not charged for an oil filter. The filters are actually wire mesh screens which are cleaned and reused.

No, they cleaned and re-used mine. I actually heard it run a few minutes ago. Sounds like a whole different bike since the valve adjustment.
I took some during pics today. I'll download them soon.
