So i have two of these wonderful xs650's and they both have starter problems. they have been sitting for awhile. when I push the starter button sometimes it will grab for a little bit and will turn over the engine just fine. Other times it will make a bad grinding noise like its slipping or something. I have been doing some research to figure out if I can fix this. It seems like a little cleaning might work? this is the advice I have found in my research
"Remove and disassemble the starter motor. Clean the contacts and regrease the shaft and bearings on the motor. To clean the contacts, you may need a small piece of 1000 grit sandpaper. Lightly sand the contact ponts till they are shiney again and make sure that you do the same with the brushes."
but I dont have a repair manual or the money to buy one. so I was wondering if someone could:
A. tell me if this might fix my problem.
B. if this will fix my problem where the starter motor is located and how hard is it to get to?
Thanks in advance for the help

chrismeats,
Well, the grinding you hear is from the "Bendix" gear that engages the engine to turn it over. Very common problem in XS650's.
That gear is located behind the clutch under the right side engine cover. You will have to drain the oil, remove the cover, remove the clutch and replace the gear. www.mikesxs.com has a complete kit to replace the gear and associated spring.
You are going to need a few tools to do this job, if I am correct about it. The main one is a clutch holder that you need to hold the clutch so you can loosen the nut and retorque it. You will need a torque wrench as well.
I think that virtually everybody here has replaced that gear, so you will have plenty of help when you do the job.

A couple of things that might help.

A link to an online manual you can download too.

I have a starter that came on my bike that I think needs rebuilding. It quit on me and I swapped it out with one I bought on ebay for $25. The ebayed one works fine but I think I'd like to have a back up if I can get it done cheap enough. There are some rebuilders locally that I think would do it reasonably.
