I got a bike with a missing ignitor, a missing coil and frayed trigger wires in the stator.
I taped up 1 location where just the insulation was nicked, soldered up the spot where it has gone 1/2 way through with a new wire section and put a ebay black box and a seca igniton coil - direct plug in only had to extend the right side plug wire. Did it with a section of silicone/graphite wire instead of the metal type.

New iridium plugs are in and all the wiring is hooked up. Good battery, cranks over pretty good but no spark.

I suspect the wiring to the electro magnet, but have no clue what could be wrong. This is my first bike wiht that setup that I have got into. My previous XS never had me getting into that part.

Could someone point me in the right direction. TIA.
Cool.

There are three wires on the pickup coil...........one is common the other two are the two coils in the pickup coil........so you should read about 700 ohms from the common (think it is the sideways connector) to either side (or in other words each coil should be 700 ohms or so)..........

the electromagnet as you call it (rotor has nothing to do with the small magnet on the rotor face that passes the pickup coil inducing a small current (like a guitar pickup) that goes to the ignitor box........the reason for 2 coils I think is for the advance........

Srinath,

What year / model is the bike? '82 and '83 models had the troublesome kick stand ignition cut off that drives people crazy. If that's what you have, then unplug the kick stand relay under the left side filter cover.

Oooo xsjohn, definetly worth measuring, I should see if my soldering and taping etc did something, I also should check the ignition coil for resistances etc in case some stuff is liable to get burnt.

Bingo pamcopete.
82 special, and kickstand doo hickey is safely in a box. Its open for kill, closed for run isn't it.

Cool.

Srinath,

Well, i don't have an '82, but I believe you can just remove the sidestand relay to eliminate that feature, so that would indicate that the B/W kill wire is left open to run.

Here's a 82 diagram from Jayels gallery, I would think by looking at it, that on is closed, though what I think & what is can be 2 different things. Hope the diagram helps anyway, cheers

I had a thought.
I pulled the side stand mechanism off the bike. The relay is still in, however, side stand being down or up should have nothing to do with it not starting. Cos its supposed to start side stand down or up, just not if its in gear. Its in neutral for sure, so something is killing the spark. Also would it even crank ? Its cranking fine, just no spark.

BTW this bike has sat in the rain and crap for so long, I mean the cyls were rusted to the thing ... and I had it not crank on the start button. I had to short across the solenoid a few times, and about the 10th time I disconnected and cleaned the plug from the start switch, it started to crank with the start button.

I definetly have connection problems, worth cleaning and putting em back on ... many times prolly. There is prolly a ton of muck in each connector there.

Cool.

Srinath,

Well, you are assuming that the side stand circuit and the neutral switch circuit are working properly. Something is not working properly, so if it was me I would remove the side stand relay to get rid of the issue.

Oh crap you are making me look stupid dude ... fine I will confess ...

The neutral swicth is disconnected. Its a single wire fitting with a small phillips screw on the top side of the engine cases under the left carb or there abouts right ... fine, on my virago it was right about where it is on the XS but clear under the motor. I never even registered it as the neutral switch, I thought it was oil swicth.

K egg on my face, neutral swicth dis connected, side stand fitting pulled off but relay left in.

BTW most of the bikes electricals are out, like guages, headlight, tail light etc etc ... but I plugged all them wires on to get it cranked over.

Thanks Pete. This has shown me how stupid I can be. This has kicked my butt for 2 hours after which I beat my head for the next 2 days. Thank god I didn't just work on it 2 days.

Cranking and not starting ... would it do that though.

Just idle curiosity, It wont surprise me 1 bit, cos my virago 535 with a blown fuse will crank all day long, and even misfire once or twice but never start.

Cool.

Yes, watch out for the old fuse panels. I changed out mine early in the game for inlines.

The schematics for the '82's and the '83's will make your eyes roll around in your head like two BB's in a tuna can. I'd simplify my wiring but it works for now.

I would simplify my wiring too, but I cannot kick this bike to life unless it was warm from riding. Yea, my first XS taught me to never get rid of the starter.

Srinath,

Have you tried removing the side stand relay?
