'81 xs650 special. Between the carbs is a T connector that fuel from the petcock goes to. It seems to be plastic on the outside and at least partly metal on the inside. The plastic is cracked pretty bad, all over it. Is it metal throughout on the inside, or is it getting ready to start leaking gas and fall apart?

The T is all metal coated with plastic.
Start by splitting the carbs.
1. Scrape the plastic off of the "T" and sand paper smooth.
2. Get a section of plastic (Neoprene) 1/4 " gas line.
3. Cut a couple of sections of the line and insert them in the carb openings. Allow enough to stick out a bit so you can check if they are collapsing.
4. Insert the T into each section of line.
5. Use a clamp to squeeze the carbs together.
6. As you apply pressure with the clamp, pause once and a while to let the gas line and T "relax". It's a really tight fit, but once done, it'll never leak again.

Thanks. Mine isn't leaking at the moment, I was afraid it would start leaking soon if the plastic wasn't covering metal, due to all the cracking. Glad to find it's all metal inside, rather than something like three tubes joined by plastic.

Hi great tip
I am told that you can also wrap the tee with plumbers gas tape,
dont know if it would work, is gas tape fuel resistant

Ive used some stuff called Plasti Dip that they sell at hardware stores to dip piler handles in. It costs half as much at Harbor Freight and is made in the USA. Just dip it in once & let it dry or it will be too thick. One can will last a lifetime of 650s.

I call the T fitting leak the Keihein ailment.
T's between Keihein carbs (kawi and honda in the mid/late 80's) were keihein ones and while I like the keihein carbs themselves, every 2-3 years they will spring a leak. Those were metal grooved for O rings.
On mikuni's of the same vintage suzuki and some yamaha, in early 80's and most yamaha's after 86 or so, until then yamaha ran hitachi (love those BTW) the T fittings had a sorta grooved hose type ... like 3-4 O rings in a short length in the carb body and the T fittings in some cases were plastic.
Never leaked.
Good to know the home technique for it works well too.
Cool.
Srinath.

Be careful though when I did this the fuel line over the tee got pushed in further than the tee & closed of the fuel passage, well not closed it but made the fuel passage much smaller & ran out of fuel when riding.
This repair works just be carful the outer fuel line does not get pushed in further than you want or it will bloke the fuel passage

wally,
That is why you cut the fuel line longer than needed so you can see if it is pushed in too far.
