PostPosted: September 16, 2009, 9:45 pm    Post subject: speedometer,

I forgot to lube my screw drive pinion when i put my bike together,I was hearing a chattering noise, I figured it may be my new brakes I just put on, well the chattering stoped. and so did my speedometer,I guess i smoothed down the gear enough now that the other gear wont turn it,now where do i get another one,?I took it apart and checked it out,, but the cable wont turn, unless i turn the wheel backwards.. but forward, the cable wont turn,,any ideas where i can pick one up. Mikes dont carry them, and 650 central not showing them, is that a dealer item,?

thanks for anyhelp

Try here: www.nwvcp.com/pages/pa...maha.aspx.

I have a somewhat related question (purely academic, of course): Is going above the limit of the speedometer in any way harmful to the mechanism, does it throw it out of calibration or anything like that?

Search NW Vintage Cycle Parts, then on the sidebar look for OEM parts, Yamaha. Select the year and so on, then you can search parts by assembly. They have a lot of stuff, but not everything. Worth a shot.

Do you have a bike salvage yard around? I think Yamaha used about the same speedo drive on most of the bikes around the same years.

I'm not exactly clear here. The cable won't turn as it comes from the speedo drive on the wheel? If you remove the cable from the speedo drive and the speedometer it turns?
Did a quick search on ebay and there are several listed for not too much. Search for speedometer drive or sensor. Not sure what year fits what though.

There is no mechanical connection from the cable gear's to the speedo needle. The needle is attached to an aluminium 'cup'. The cable has a magnet attached to it. When the cable spins the magnet, the invisible line's of magnetic flux turn the aluminium cup. This is called movement by induction. Aluminium is non magnetic, or also called non ferrous, so the magnetic line's have enough 'hold' to move the cup.
I,too am confused as to what your describing shooter, the front wheel will not turn the cable, but you can turn it by hand? And make the speedo work? When my tach went bad, it started making a horrible noise, then my cable started to bind up, making a pretzel shape. The shaft in the tach was the culprit, as it froze to the bushing it sit's in. Had to replace the tach assy. itself. Anyway's, need a little more info.

Seeing as how he was doing the brakes when the speedo quit I assumed he messed up the speedo drive at the wheel.

I got real good at taking the front wheel off the forks.I did that i guess five times in two days.I did how ever get the speedomter to work,
as far as i know. the speedometer is fine, Im dealing with the speedomter gear box drive and the drive gear pinion, and screw drive pinion,I must not of had the box drive in the slots of the drive gear the right way. And i bent the ears up a little. and that seemed to work fine, so either my bending the tabs up or i finely got the pieces together the correct way. it works..
