I thought maybe tip of the week might be a good thread to link into the vault!
Retiredgentlemans tip below on replacing carb butterflies was a beauty, must be hundreds more just like it????????
If you've got a good tip, or someone elses has got you out of the poo, add it here!
Yes, the butterflys should be able to go fully closed. There is a trick to re-installing the butterflys, after you have had the throttle shafts out for the seal replacement.
There is some play in the way the butterfly screws onto the throttle shaft. You screw in the 2 small screws, but leave the screws loose. Close the butterfly fully, so that the butterfly is forced into the correct fully closed position ( the carb body alines the butterfly). Then fully screw in the screws.
If you simply tighten up the screws without doing the self alinement, then the butterflys may not close fully (bind on one side of the carb body).
Use lock-tite on the screw threads.

RG's tip on rolling the engine on it's nose to slide the jugs on was a good tip also. This way you aren't fighting the weight of the jugs.
I think it was in the thread on his rebuild.

Hi Guys,
I can't remember who told me, but the first time I had the '77 engine to take out and realized how heavy it is, someone here told me about laying the bike on it's side, cushioning the area and letting gravity help.
It was brilliant, and my back *really* appreciates it.....although it doesn't work as well with a sidecar on. (That's what my son is for....)

This may be useful to others on a re-build:
The following method makes installing the cylinders/pistons very easy.
Install the inner wrist pin circlips into both pistons at the same time you install rings and then put the pistons fully into the cylinders from the bottom.
Install cylinder base gasket. Rotate the engine to stand on its nose, so that the cylinders/pistons can slide onto the studs horizontally. Slide the cylinders/pistons down the studs, feeding cam chain as you go. I used a clamp to hold the conn rods just below the cylinder bottom. Tap the pistons down until holes line up for the wrist pins. Install the wrist pins and outer circ clips. Remove clamp and slide the cylinders fully into the crankcase. Rotate engine so cylinders are vertical again. Carry on with front camchain guide, camshaft/bearings etc.
With this method, you're not fighting with the weight of the cylinders and less chance of the camchain falling downward.

Thanks........something else I have noticed on engine noise through the years........as they get some miles on them the piston can get more noisy due to increased skirt clearance.......Jack mentioned piston rock as a noise sourse........this is another good reason to warm the engine up for a bit before putting a load on it........let the piston warm and swell some to better reduce skirt clearance thus piston rock................
