We removed the swingarm from a '75 parts bike to use in a '77 frame. Reading the Haynes manual, it mentions a shim in the dustcaps.
The dustcaps were present in the '75 swingarm, but there are/were no shims. Are they always required? Are they a standard thickness or do you have to set the side-to-side play?
We will most likely be installing brass swingarm bushings, if that makes any difference.

On mine there were no shims and none were needed.
Btw, the overhanging part of my brass bushings were too large to seat in dust caps right, so I went around the edge of the bushings with a flat file until they fit (after the bushings were installed).
