I'm building up a 447 from a box. Any good ideas on finding the right
index marks and timing the cam?

I'd suggest installing the cam tensioner after you install the cam and before butttoning up the motor. Rotate the motor and recheck the timing. I missed by one tooth because I didn't make this check. I was not happy.

Using a small dowel (I use a piece of bamboo barbeque skewer), you can jam-fit a line in the center hole in the end of the crank and pull it up across the camshaft center. With the cam chain adjustor installed and at normal setting, the notch in the cam boss should be positioned exactly parallel to the line at TDC.

Thanks for the tips. i've just noticed that the person taking the motor
apart didn't mark the ignition points mounting plate either, so my
odds of getting all this timed on the first pass aren't good...
