I was looking on my KZ site and a guy there was doing something called "gun coating" that looks really sweet and is supposed to wear well. There was some good pics but I think some were taken down. I'll look..
It's a long post but to me interesting to read about the coating process and before and after.

I bet it would look really good on wheels.

I wish my old factory job was still running, we did parkerizing - dull finish but held oil like crazy, wipe it down and it shined, no rust unless you were lazy

thanks for all the advice, i have called around and received quotes on powder coating. holy crap that stuffs not cheap. i paid 80 for my set of wheels. and the cheapest ive found powder coating is 80 bucks a rim!!! and ive got the rest of my bike to do!
so since this project is my baby, i have decided to purchase a powder coat system and do it myself. from all i've read on the process, it shouldnt be too difficult. and for the system and powder ill be spending around 150. thanks again for all the advice

if u powder coat or have some one do them,,,,,, make sure all oil or grease is gone,, I have a lot of parts powder coated on my car. only after I repainted and repainted,if u do the rims. make sure u leave the old spokes in place,as the coating will go into the threads. and u'll play hell getting the spoke back in,if u take them off..

The saying goes you get what you pay for,I've been powder coating for about 5 years and you'll soon find out why they want 80 bucks a wheel to do it. Plus what are you gonna use for an oven? If your gonna do a bike frame a Harbour freight gun is not gonna cut it, Not enough power to charge the frame for good coverage. What are you gonna use for a spray and reclaiming area? Powder is explosive a spark from an electric motor can set it off bye bye. If you build your own oven your gonna have at least 500 bucks into it.Plus all the little goodies you need to go along with it,special tapes and stoppers that can take high heat so you dont screw up bolt holes et.The best you can do with a $150 is a toaster oven or an electric kitchen stove and a harbour freight gun to powder coat small pieces. And believe it or not there is a learning curve. I sandblasted some aluminum before powder coating and when it came out of the oven it had little pieces of sand under the powder coating, turn out little pieces of sand or blasting medium actually get imbedded in the aluminum when you sand blast it at the wrong angle and the heat from the oven draws it up to the surface, how hard do think it was to remove that powder coating? your right.Google Caswell plating they have a great users forum on powdercoating, building ovens and polishing metals.

Check out the guy over on the Garage . He built an oven for wheels and uses a toaster oven for small parts. His stuff looks great. I'd post a link but don't know how. Look under paint and powder coating.
